As a result of a 2004 class action lawsuit, Microsoft Corporation agreed to provide vouchers to consumers and businesses in many states and the District of Columbia to purchase certain hardware and software products. However, eligible consumers and businesses did not take steps to obtain the vouchers. Therefore, the states have been effectively holding millions of dollars of unclaimed funds.
Under the terms of a "cy pres" provision in the settlement agreements, states can give a portion of the unclaimed vouchers to certain schools to purchase hardware and software products. Every state will handle the vouchers differently and will establish state-specific criteria for how schools can claim the money.
